Austin's Life Project.

The American Legion provided us
with a copy of their activities and
Events for the year. The majority of the
events are open to the families of Troop
41. There are some events that are
strictly for adults. Anyone interested
should inquire with the Legion to
determine any limitations. Please see
the Events list below.
American Legion Events 2011-12.pdf

Mr. Baker reports that,
unlike previous years, he
does not plan to offer
Camping Merit Badge to
eligible Scouts as a general
class this year.
Scouts who are interested in
working on Camping Merit
Badge with him should
contact him directly to make
appropriate arrangements.
This year he has set some
minimum requirements for
Scouts who wish to work on
Camping Merit Badge with
him. They are: (1)
must be in 7th grade
(equivalent) or higher; (2)
must be 2nd Class or higher;
and (3) must have 12 nights
of camping experience as
defined in the Camping Merit
Badge Requirements.
Mr.
Baker also can teach
Geocaching, Orienteering and
Railroading Merit badges.
Any Scouts who are
interested in those badges
should speak to him
directly.

October 21-23 - Mount Monadnock Camping Trip
- Commitment forms went out
on September 14 and are due
back with a $10 deposit on
Wednesday, September 21. The
commitment form will allow
us to determine if we have
enough attending, so that
reservations can be made for
the campsite and guarantee
there are sufficient
Scouts/adults to make the
trip worthwhile. In the past
this trip has always been
memorable for anyone who has
attended.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is a
list of required
equipment for the
Mount Monadnock Trip
this weekend. Based
on past trips taken
by the troop, Mr.
Wenners took the
time to put this
list together us.
Even if you are not
going, please save a
copy of this for
future treks of this
type.
Monadnock Packing
List
Hiking Mt Monadnock
can be a fun and
enjoyable
experience, as long
as you are prepared
for the climb.
To make it easier on
you, each Scout
should have the
following items (in
addition to the
usual camping trip
items) with them on
this trip:
-
·
Hiking
boots – a good
sturdy pair,
preferably not brand
new. It’s not a
good idea to take a
hike like this in a
brand new pair of
boots. They could
end up hurting you.
Also, the boots
should be
waterproof, as the
conditions on this
mountain could vary
greatly from the
base to the top.
Under no
circumstances will
sneakers be
allowed. Likewise,
all boots must be
tied to the top for
maximum support and
safety.
o
A
hydration bag or
roughly 2-3 liters
of water (that’s
roughly 6 of those
small bottles of
water everyone’s
used to drinking –
you will drink it
all) A gallon of
water is not out of
the question.
o
Extra
socks for the climb
o
A
winter hat and a
pair of gloves, in
case it’s cold on
top
o
An
extra layer that
you’re not wearing
on the hike
(sweatshirt,
sweater, etc…)
o
A
personal first aid
kit (just a small
one, but just in
case)
o
A
whistle (in case you
get find yourself
alone for some
reason and need to
call for help)
o
A
raincoat/rainpants/poncho
(it could easily be
raining/snowing on
the top)
o
A
small pocket mirror
(for signaling) and
a book of matches
(in a plastic bag) –
again, just in case
you separate
yourself from the
group and become
lost. Best to be
prepared.
·
A pair
of non-cotton pants
for the hike (think
track pants, wind
pants, etc…)
·
Layers
of clothing (base
layer, shirt,
sweatshirt, jacket)
Use common sense
when packing,
please. This is a
fun climb, but the
last quarter of the
climb is 100% rock
and is difficult.
Likewise, this
portion of the hike
is above the tree
line and subject to
a completely
different weather
pattern than you may
have been feeling on
most of the climb
up. Temperatures
can easily vary
20-30 degrees colder
than when you
started at the
bottom, so please
plan accordingly.
Shorts should not be
packed for this
trip. Daytime
temperatures will
only rise to the mid
50’s on Saturday,
with nighttime lows
in the low to mid
30’s – not factoring
in the wind that
will most assuredly
be present as you
get above the tree
line. That’s winter
coat weather around
here – so be smart
and you’ll be safe
and have a great
time. No one wants
to be cold. Plan on
packing your winter
sleeping bag. Think
of this as a winter
campout and you’ll
be on the right
track.
For those
attending
the
Monadnock
trip this
weekend,
please bring
your the
boots that
you intend
on wearing.
We want to
make sure
that they
are
appropriate.
They are
required for
a safe and
enjoyable
trip.
Sneakers
will only be
allowed at
the
campsite.
You must
have boots
for the
trail.
Thank
You,
Henry
Beckvold,
Scoutmaster

A separate commitment form
will go out for the
activities in December,
January and February. This
form will be passed out on
Wednesday, September 21.
The calendar for the
2011-2012 year was approved
by the Troop Committee and
can be viewed on the troop's
website at
http://www.abingtonscouts.com/Troop_41/index.html
As more information is put
together for each trip, the
calendar will be updated.
So, please check it often.
Also, as a reminder, if
there are funds in the Scout
Account, they can be used
for trips and deposits.

Scouting for Food
Saturday
November 5th,
starting @
9 AM
for bag distribution
Saturday
November 12th,
starting @
10 AM
for bag collection
Please join Troop 41 and Packs
11 and 41 on these two dates as
we help support
St. Vincent De Paul's Food
Pantry. Each year our goal is
to exceed the previous
year's total collection. Cheryl
Hatch has, once again, stepped
forward to oversee the event.
She will be handing out route
assignments. So, let's work
together to support our
community. Adults with cars,
vans, station wagons and trucks
are needed, especially on
collection day. Families are
asked to check in on both days
before they go out on their
routes. Each family is asked to
take a route. Once families
have received their routes, they
can certainly work together with
other families. Bags can be
delivered any time
on Saturday or
Sunday, November 5th
or 6th, but they must
be picked up
on Saturday, November 12th.
Siblings are invited to assist
in any way they can. Remember,
many hands make light work.

Special Troop Meeting Location
Wednesday, November 9th,
6:45-8:30 PM
Cub Scout Hall on Chestnut
Street
Due to the American Legion
hosting a function this night,
the Cub scouts have allowed us to use their hall. Scouts are
asked to be respectful of the
facility, as we are guests.

Veteran's Day
Parade
Friday,
November 11,
Rockland
Time TBA
Let the veterans of Abington,
Rockland and Whitman know
that we appreciate all that they
have done to protect our freedom
and rights, as citizens. This
year's parade steps off in
Rockland. We'll start off near
Hoadley and Sons Water Works,
672 Union Street (The exact
location is to be announced
later. This is a new starting
location for Rockland) and
finish at Market Street by
Burger King.
